Depends on what your wanting to shoot with it. I'd prefer the .22 mag because its less effected by the wind and it will take larger game

I personally like the .17HMR . I have one in the gunroom and it is an AMAZINGLY accurate shooter, and FAST. If taking small game there is no better round. The only thing .22 Mag has over it might be ammo availability. Although .17 does seem to be catching on fast and around here ammo is easy to find.

Depends on what you use(s) would be. I prefer the .22WMR for it's larger size, familiarity and that I can use my .22 bore snake to clean the barrel. The .17 is a faster and flatter shooting round and has further serviceable distance than the 22mag, but is more susceptible to crosswinds and you need a special cleaning rod about the size of a coat hanger wire.

Yeah, we need more info
I can tell you that the 17 should be more accurate than the 22mag. The 17 should be able to get honest .75" averages at 100 yards on a calm day. Very few 22mags can come close to that - although they are being made in the vmax bullet as well. I really like the 17hmr for game like crows, rabbits, squirrels, coons, and groundhogs. But if you're going to go after fox or coyote, I'd rather have the 22mag. There was a discussion here last week about the same thing. It was pretty mixed opinion. You should be able to find it a few pages back. |

.22 Mag is an old standby, tried and true powerful rimfire. It has a little more power than the .17 because .22 projectiles weight a little bit more. .17 HMR is faster and it has a more "flat" trajectory. It it also the "new kid in the block." So you need to decide as to whether you want a little more power with the good-ole standby or the flatter, faster "new kid".

Your best choice is the 22 Magnum according to articles comparing the two calibers.*

I would go with the 22 magnum due to having a better chance of killing whatever you’re shooting at due to the projectiles on offer

I would opt for the .22 magnum (in fact I did opt for the .22 magnum). The clincher for me was the .22WMR V-Max ammunition. Hornady and CCI both make it. The 30 grain V-Max in .22 WMR out to 100 yards it is pretty much a push with the .17 HMR and beyond 100 yards it's all .22 WMR. It has made a fine accessory to my .223 varmint rifle.

After looking at ballistics charts, I chose the .22 magnum. Downrange energy was better. If you get the magnum, you wont be disappointed.
