I already passed my test and awaiting interview, but i kinda worried that they only issue 9mm berreta to agents. Iam interested in buying a .45 usp with hallow point ammo. The reason for this is that there have been hundreds of incidents along the border with heavily armed men escorting drug mules
they typicly use the ak-47. Now i know a pistol is no match for a automatic rifle but it does have the stoppin power that the 9mm doesent have. Please share your experiances and knowladge

Like any large law enforcement agency, you will be issued your duty weapon and holster and probably ammunition as well. You will not be allowed to carry your personal side arm on duty. You will use department ammunition.

These decisions are based on training and liability issues. If the rest of the men are carrying 9mm Berettas and you show up with your Colt .45, the trainers will have to make special allowances for your gun. Attempting to train large numbers of officers, all carrying different guns, is a nightmare. So, everybody gets the same gun and the same holster and the same ammo. Using dept. ammo prevents accusations of some hot shot agent using some kind of special, nuke tipped ammo and getting his agency sued for excessive force.

From what I gather you are wanting this job so you can carry around a gun. Which is not a good reason to apply for this job. The very best law enforcement officers around have never shot a round off in anger, because they have always handled a situation in the best possible way. I will grant you though that there are scenarios where one might need to use their firearm and have no other choice, but these a freak occurrences.

I would not go out and buy any gun just yet. If the interviewer is half decent, he'll hopefully weed you out of the process. Try the minute man you'll be able to shoot more people with them.

some departments allow you to use your own weapon, but it must meet derpartment specs. If they only issue 9mm than odds are that's the only caliber they approve. As for ammo, that is usually mandated by department regs as well. I've worked for departments that allowed me to own my own pistol and others that refused. You need to check wtith the department to find out the correct answer to your question.

All federal law enforcement agencies issue a standard firearm to their officers. They also issue the ammunition for it. You do not get to pick and choose your own gun and ammo.
