Does the Wildlife and Game Commission tag different animals different colors? What is the purpose of tagging them? My father has a wildlife camera and got a glimpse of what appears to be a mountain lion (here in Pennsylvania). It has a blue tag in its left ear.

It's extremely common for the fish and game department to tag animals - especially animals that are not very common, or, roam a large area. Normally the animals are found in spring time when they are small and easy to handle - they dart mom and put her to sleep for a few minutes, then take some measurements of the young and tag them.

It is perfectly legal to hunt tagged animals. Matter of fact, most fish and wildlife agencies request hunters take a tagged animal if possible - it's the only way they can get an end history on the animal and figure out how far it has come from when the first saw it years ago. Opposite is true with animals that have a radio collar - fish and game prefers you don't shoot them, but, there is no law against it.
