Well, you need something to stick the foliage onto, and when the leaves and grass die, then what? Having made my own Ghille suit/gear in the past, you need something to adhere the materials to, that is easy to take on/off.
I'd suggest buying a cheap one and adding your own natural elements to it, or you could go buy coveralls, sew some netting on it, attache jute, burlap and leaf-o-flague type materials to it, and add your natural stuff to make it blend into the environment. EDIT- HAHAHAHAHA love the Chia Pet idea- Funny!!! |

buy some burlap, or get some coveralls made of canvas, and get some white to light tan yarn cut the yarn into eight to twelve inch strips. take a big needle thread a piece of yarn push it through the burlap or canvas and then push the needle back through less than a quarter inch apart. pull the yarn through holding one half until you have an even length in each hand the do a simple loop knot maybe two. Do this a million times and you have a home made gillie suit. Oh use cotton yarn, no synthetics. Now go roll in the grass and mud to "wash" the suit it will pick up the green and browns from what ever you roll in. Or take it to a creek and rub the suit under the water in the mud. Another option is get some dirt leaves grass and whatever else from the area your going to hunt in put them in a bucket or Rubbermaid container fill with water throw in the suit stir and set it in a sunny spot, covered. It'll stink like crazy after a few days but stir every other week for a month or two adding more leaves and grass and such after it starts to take on some color remove and air out/dry for about 2 weeks. wash it in the laundry by its self with just warm water air dry again. When you go through the woods dry leaves and grass will stick in that yarn, rake some leaves and roll in it and there you go.
P.S. I've never tried this out so if it works cool if not, sorry. I read about it in a magazine once. |

I suppose you are asking how to make a ghilli suit. I made one and it was a good one. I took a set of camo coveralls, a bunch of camo cloth, some camo mesh that was intended to make a deer blind, a bunch of dark colored string and some fake greenery. I cut the camo material into strips about 1 to 2 inches wide and about 18 to 24 inches long. I did the same with the mesh and the string. Then I got a needle and thread and sewed all of this stuff onto the camo coveralls in a random pattern until I had the coveralls completely covered. I also did a camo hunting hat so that the stuff hung down in front of my face and yet allowed me to see through it. Several nights of hand sewing while watching TV and I had a pretty good looking ghilli suit. Now if you want a simple way with no work, just get out your check book and go buy one already made. If you're not willing to put in the necessary work or pay the price, then you just don't want a ghilli suit badly enough.

A set of BDUs (Battle Dress Uniforms) in either a Tiger Stripe or Woodland Camo will provide you with plenty of concealment.

Here is a web site where they make kits to make ghillie suites. ccamo with natrual leaves and grasses are only good for about a day 2 at the max. So I would not worry about making it out of natural stuff.
