Ok. I live in Micigan. I have a Mauser 32. cal pistol from 1914. My Granpa brought it back and he died 15 years ago. and my Grandma didnt tell us about it. She had a Stroke and is in a old folks Home. we were clearing her house so we could sell the house to help pay for the cost of being in the nursing home. And I found it in a dresser drawer with a note. I am sure it was never registerd before. Do i have to register it and if so can it be done or will the police take it away? I am thinking it falls under antique. I am an avid gun collector just rifle's though and would like to keep it. Its in very good working condition. Please Help.

Well, it sure sounds like it could fall under C&R status, but you need a license to purchase any handgun and to register any owned handgun, In michigan.

So, I would re-register that pistol if I were you

Because, folks (owners of handguns) do no need to be licensed in michigan, and firearms can be transferred without profit (if you don't have an FFL), the police probably won't confiscate the gun when you try register it. but certainly DO register it. As may be able to take action if you don't

good luck! and congratulations on the great find

Don't know the answer to your question, but can tell you the Mauser that I have of the same vintage is fun to shoot. I handload for mine too. If you are going to use it for a defensive purpose, Federal Hydra Shok is the best ammofor that.

If you plan on transferring the weapon to someone else you _may_ run into problems with the BATFE. Otherwise you should be fine. Visit this on C&R here for some nice bathroom reading:

"No state permit is required to possess a rifle or shotgun. Every person within the state who owns or obtains a handgun, in any manner, must present the handgun to either the city chief of police or the county sheriff of the locality where he resides. A certificate of inspection will then be issued containing a description of the handgun inspected"

I think you can show up, state that you inhereted a gun. It shouldn't matter if you inhereted it from a relative out of state who has no registration requirements or whatnot. If they ask, be honest, stay it was Granpa's gun. They can't do anythign to him for not registering. Also, no worries about grandma either, she had a stroke, if the state wants to bring her in for questioning or anything, they automatically become responsible for her medical care, and no way they want to blow money on that for an old lady

    In Michigan, yes you do.

    Listen the akluis's advice above........

You may wish to call your local PD and ask for the name of the officer that handles gun inspections and registrations.

Then call him and ask him how you go about registering a gun that you inherited. Be honest, but don't volunteer details unless they are asked.

I'm sure he will appreciate that you were considerate enough to schedule an appointment when he was available. Also, do not walk into a police station with a gun. Leave in in a package in your locked trunk, go inside and ask him to come to the parking lot with you. (25% of uniformed cops are rookies in most places....use caution)
