    Serrated or Just plain blade?
I really just plan on using it for self defense.
Dont ever cut ropes or wire.

If you include cutting yourself free from a seatbelt...serrated.
Can you find one that is half-and-half ?

I really prefer a plain blade for most uses
partly because that is what I grew up with and mostly because the serrated edges are a pain to sharpen
the serrated edge is only useful for me in the event that I need to cut myself or someone else free from seatbelt so I do carry special cutter in car for that purpose
the combo blades may not be a bad idea and I have a couple but my everyday carry is a CRKT M16 with a plain edge spear blade

Plain blade...try a Marine Ka-Bar from sgtgrit.com, about $50, been in use since WW2. Very good utility/close combat tool.
