It totally depends on the manufacturer of the round and the gun you're using it in. Apart from indoor competition, I find the 22lr to be susceptable to wind speed and direction. It has a big drop (on average) at around 150 feet. On the other hand, due to minimum recoil, the accuracy when firing from a semi-auto 22lr (especially pistol) far exceeds higher calibre weapons at close quarters, and in quick succession. When I was travelling, I carried a Beretta 89 22lr for its ease of use, safety features, and reliability. It was probably a bit big in overall size, but it was one hell of a deterrent to would-be robbers (I had an incident in Thailand with a couple of knife weilding bandits who ran as soon as I produced it from my shoulder holster!). The 22lr round is also very cheap, and if you were ever to be in a shootout (haha), I'd fancy your chances with at least putting an opponent down with a 22 than with a .357 or 9mm (when you fire a shot with those babies, it'll take 5 times longer to get an accurate second shot off, unless you're pretty strong in the wrists!), and besides... you don't really want to kill somebody. If you're hunting, a 22lr is fine for rabbits or small birds... and that's about it. Also, the velocity will depend on manufacturer. You can purchase supersonic (344metres/sec+) rounds, but be sure your firearm can take it. Some of the cheaper pistols are best suited to lower velocity rounds. As far as penetration is concerned... well, I think you'd be lucky to go through a cowhide. A friend of mine was shot with a .22lr and it lodged in his calf muscle. I don't know if this is any help to you, but I just imparted what I know in the hope that it did.
    Cheers and shoot safe.

Ballistics are never the same for any diffrent brands of ammo.
